Children Dance Classes in Burlington – Ballroom, Salsa/Latin 🗓

Rhythm First — Children (Ages 6–8)

Mondays · 5:00–5:45 pm · 6-Week Program

A rhythm-led movement program using Ballroom & Salsa/Latin dance to build coordination, confidence, and focus.

Before children need steps or choreography,
they need rhythm.

Rhythm First is a 45-minute weekly movement class for children ages 6–8, developed at danceScape, that teaches how timing works in the body — so movement feels organized, confident, and enjoyable.

What Makes Rhythm First Different

Most children’s dance programs start with steps and hope rhythm follows.

Rhythm First reverses that order.

We begin with rhythm and timing — using sound, movement, and music — so children:

  • feel when to move
  • prepare before action
  • coordinate without overthinking

Once rhythm is clear, we introduce choreography and group formations that feel achievable instead of overwhelming.

Our Core Focus: Ballroom & Salsa/Latin (On Purpose)

Rhythm First is grounded in Ballroom and Salsa/Latin dance, because these styles are especially powerful for teaching rhythm, coordination, and awareness.

Why Ballroom & Salsa/Latin?

These styles naturally develop:

  • clear rhythmic structure
  • balance and weight transfer
  • preparation and recovery
  • moving with others in space
  • partner and group awareness

We draw from dances such as:

  • Ballroom: Waltz, Quickstep, Tango
  • Salsa / Latin: ChaCha, Rumba, Jive/Swing, Merengue, Bachata, Salsa

Children are not being trained for competition.
These dances are used as tools to help rhythm settle in the body.

Choreography Is Part of the Learning

Yes — Rhythm First includes choreography.

But choreography is introduced after rhythm is established, so children can learn patterns with confidence.

Children experience choreography through:

  • individual movement
  • group formations (parallel)
  • mirrored group movement
  • duo work
  • duo teams within group formations

Because rhythm leads:

  • choreography feels organized
  • memory improves naturally
  • confidence grows instead of frustration

Guest Styles & Rise Through Rhythm

As part of our Rise Through Rhythm is danceScape’s community initiative designed to ensure children can participate not only in Ballroom & Latin but also Hip Hop, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances.

Through this initiative, we reserve a limited number of spaces each term for children whose families may need full support, partial support, or flexible contribution options.

This is not a separate program.
Children participate fully and equally alongside their peers.

What Happens in a 45-Minute Class

Each class includes:

  • rhythm games using sound and movement
  • guided group choreography
  • individual, group, and partner-based learning
  • playful repetition that builds confidence

Classes are structured, supportive, and designed so children leave feeling successful and energized.
