Illness. Grief. Caregiving. Anxiety. Isolation. A major life change.
When someone is already carrying something difficult, the cost of joining a program shouldn’t be one more reason to stay home and go through it alone.
Through Rise Through Rhythm, a danceScape community initiative launched earlier this year for children and youth/teen, danceScape is extending its original vision by setting aside a limited number of complimentary or nominal-fee spaces in danceTONE cardio and danceFLOW qigong/taichi for people experiencing significant life circumstances where finances are also a barrier.
danceScape uses movement, music and human connection as a gentle way to rise, reconnect and take that next step forward.
No complicated application. No need to publicly share a personal story.
Simply connect with danceScape confidentially and tell us a little about your situation by emailing support@dancescape.com or leave a message at 905 633-8808.
Sometimes You Just Need Somewhere to Go
The idea has personal meaning for danceScape co-founder Robert Tang.
His parents, Judy and Aaron, helped him understand how important some of life’s simplest things can become when circumstances change.
Judy’s breast cancer journey brought illness, uncertainty and caregiving into their family’s daily life. There were appointments, difficult conversations and long stretches when the future was impossible to predict.
Through it all, small moments of connection mattered.
A familiar song. A gentle movement. A shared laugh. The comfort of simply being together.
After Judy passed away, Aaron entered his own journey through grief.
Robert saw how much his father missed her—not only as his wife, but as the person who had shared the ordinary rhythms of everyday life with him.
Sometimes what helped wasn’t advice or an attempt to fix something that couldn’t be fixed.
It was companionship.
A reason to leave the house.
Somewhere to go.
In time, those shared moments also helped Robert and Aaron reconnect in a different way as father and son.
Later, when Aaron’s dementia progressed and he moved into long-term care, their relationship changed again. Robert and his sister, Selina, became not only son and daughter, but also a caregivers and advocates.
Even when Aaron could no longer remember everything, familiar music, gentle movement and the presence of family could still create moments of comfort and connection.
As their parents grew older, dancing wasn’t about becoming better dancers.
It was about movement, connection and having somewhere to go.
After losing both of parents, those memories have taken on even greater meaning.
Movement cannot remove grief, illness, dementia or life’s other challenges.
But it can provide a reason to get up.
Leave the house.
Move.
Breathe.
Smile.
See another person.
Sometimes taking that first step matters.
What Does It Mean to Rise?
“Rise” doesn’t mean someone is expected to conquer whatever they’re going through.
Sometimes rising is much simpler.
Rise from the chair.
Rise out of isolation.
Rise into movement.
Rise into the moment.
For 45 minutes, there doesn’t have to be another goal to achieve.
Sometimes it’s enough just to be there.
Two Ways to Move
danceTONE cardio
danceTONE is danceScape’s music-driven movement and cardio program, incorporating Ballroom and Latin movement and music into an accessible experience designed to get the body moving.
Rather than focusing on memorizing choreography or perfecting dance steps, participants can enjoy the rhythm, energy and character of different dances while moving at a level that works for them.
It’s about music, movement, energy and connection—and having some fun along the way.
danceFLOW qigong/taichi
danceFLOW brings together curated Qigong and Tai Chi practices with principles of breath, balance, awareness and flow.
Rather than requiring participants to memorize long traditional sequences, danceFLOW explores gentle, flowing movements that encourage people to slow down, breathe, become more aware of their bodies and move with greater intention.
The emphasis isn’t on martial application or perfecting a form. It’s about experiencing some of the underlying principles of Qigong and Tai Chi—presence, balance, relaxation, connection and flow—in an approachable way.
Different experiences.
The same invitation:
Move. Breathe. Connect.
No previous dance, Qigong or Tai Chi experience is necessary.
Come Join Us in Downtown Burlington
Whenever possible, danceScape encourages Rise Through Rhythm participants to come out and join the community in person at danceScape in downtown Burlington.
Sometimes getting dressed, leaving the house and walking through the door can itself be an important step.
There are people to meet.
Music to hear.
Movement to share.
And somewhere to be.
But danceScape also understands that not everyone is ready to walk through that door yet.
Health, caregiving, anxiety, transportation or simply where someone is in their journey can make coming out feel like too much right now.
That’s okay.
danceTONE and danceFLOW can also be experienced online, providing a way to begin moving from home.
Start where you are.
And when you’re ready, perhaps online becomes the first step toward joining the danceScape community in person.
If Cost Is the Barrier, Talk to danceScape
A limited number of Rise Through Rhythm spaces are available for people experiencing significant life circumstances where the regular cost of participating would be a genuine barrier.
There are:
No medical records required.
No financial statements required.
No requirement to publicly disclose personal circumstances.
Everything shared with danceScape will be treated confidentially.
Depending on individual circumstances, a Rise Through Rhythm space may be complimentary or available for a nominal contribution.
For those who cannot contribute, a contribution is not required.
People who can comfortably afford regular danceScape programming are encouraged to register normally. This helps preserve the limited Rise Through Rhythm spaces for those who genuinely need them.
Want to Help Someone Else Rise?
For those who are in a position to give back, they are invited to consider making a donation to the danceScape Endowment Fund at the Burlington Community Foundation.
Established in 2009, the danceScape Endowment Fund helps expand access to arts, cultural expression and movement-based learning across the community—creating a lasting resource that can help opportunities continue for others in the years ahead.

Maybe the First Step Is Simply Showing Up
It’s easy to tell yourself:
“Maybe when I’m feeling better.”
“Maybe when things settle down.”
“I can’t afford something extra right now.”
You don’t have to have everything figured out before taking the first step.
That step might be coming through the doors at danceScape in downtown Burlington.
Or it might simply be turning on your screen and joining from home.
Both count.
Start where you are.
If Rise Through Rhythm sounds like it might be for you—or someone you care about—connect with danceScape confidentially and tell us a little about your situation.
Spaces are limited and each request will be considered individually.
Let’s start with a conversation.
Sometimes you just need somewhere to go.
