When in doubt, DANCE!

Getting in shape doesn't have to be boring and repetitive. These days, you can find a way to get fit that matches your personality and keeps your mind engaged and entertained. Two local exercise instructors have wandered away from traditional aerobics and pilates - one choosing a relatively new activity and the other going back to her roots.

When in doubt, DANCE!

Gary Parker and other dancers move to the music during a NIA class recently in Pendleton

Tired of trudging to nowhere on the treadmill? Are you looking at an activity that might get you jazzed again about exercise - something a little different than traditional aerobics, pilates or spinning? Something that's not as repetitive as walking or jogging?

Ever heard of NIA?

NIA (knee-yah) isn't easily defined. Even certified instructor Michelle Miller can't describe it in 10 words or less, but she comes close.

"It's meditative movement that also incorporates cardiovascular conditioning and martial arts," Miller said.

Routines, she said, also include yoga and dance - jazz, modern and something Miller calls Duncan dancing. NIA also blends martial arts movements from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do and Aikido.

If you are in the Burlington, Oakville to Hamilton areas, consider authentic "Yang-Style" Tai Chi and Qigong.  More information at www.dancescape.com/taichi
