Sometimes, dancing is a civic duty

Few crowds buzz with more self-satisfaction than those that have been charged with eating mini burgers and drinking house cocktails in the name of civic duty. That was the mood last month at Queen Street Unmasked, the shoulder-to-shoulder, harlequin-themed Drake Hotel party organized to raise funds for the $382-million renovation of Queen Street West's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

George Stroumboulopoulos, who played emcee to a glittering evening that included an acoustic set by Serena Ryder, said that he was looking forward to the projected neighbourhood integration of CAMH, which will mix facilities with parks and retail and service outlets. "My generation looks at addiction and mental health differently. It's not 'the asylum' any more," he said.
