New dance craze still up in the air

By Wendy Tuohy

Modern dance takes many forms, but launching yourself through the air as you leap off street obstacles is one of the least choreographed - and most hip - on offer.

Known by the French moniker L'art Du Deplacement, the dynamic movement form is a sub-species of the athletic street sport, Parkour. It was imported to Melbourne from Paris and has attracted an increasingly large following.

The idea is to move from one point to another using the body and the surrounding environment to create "aesthetic" movement. Now the Melbourne performance group Trace Elements - whose motto is "be strong to be useful" - is using Deplacement as part of a live performance for three nights in North Melbourne.

The group combines physical moves with film clips members have made to produce energetic entertainment. The show, Get A Grip is on at the Arts House, North Melbourne, in a purpose-built structure, from May 6, to May 8.
