Couple dancing across nation stop in Newport

A Baltimore couple dancing their way across the United States will rock to the music of Sonny Burgess and the Pacers at the Depot Diner on Front Street in Newport from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The event also spotlights an area group’s efforts to name a section of U.S. Highway 67 “the Rock ’n’ Roll Road.”

Patty and Wayne Sipe spent 47 years tied up with a grocery business in their hometown. After retiring, they decided to dance at least one time in each state, Burgess said.

“So far, they’ve danced in 22 states,” he said.

“The way I got involved in this is a friend came to see us performing at Washington, D.C., and told us about this couple whose ambition was to dance in all of the states,” Burgess said. “The friend and her husband had seen us earlier in the year in Kansas City at Knucklehead’s, so she told them they had to contact us, so when in Arkansas they could dance to our band.”
