Not everyone can create dance-friendly magic out of sequins and fringe.

But Allen resident Kelly Kealy-Mayton can, and her mother-in-law knew it. So when she heard about the Dancing With the Stars costume-design contest, "she kept calling me saying, 'You need to send a sketch in,' " says Ms. Kealy-Mayton, 38.

The rules: Design costumes for a man and a woman who would dance the jive to "Great Balls of Fire."

"I designed a short little kicky carwash skirt, but the skirt is actually a piano piece," Ms. Kealy-Mayton says. "The menswear design is a bowling shirt with piano keys that wrap around in a circular pattern."

She was told that she'd made the finals, and then fans of the show got a chance to vote. Last week, Ms. Kealy-Mayton got a call saying that she'd won.

The prize: a trip for herself and her husband, Jim, to watch Tuesday's results show, during which her designs will be worn by two of the professional dancers in a special performance.

"It's very exciting because, when I sent the sketch in, I knew there would be thousands and thousands of them," she says. "I knew everybody who sent something in had a great idea."

But Ms. Kealy-Mayton may be uniquely qualified for the gig. She not only earned a degree in fashion, but she also worked as a ballroom-dance instructor.
